Coma is unconsciousness caused by a
disease, injury or poison. A person in a coma is described as
comatose.

Causes of coma include disease,
injury and poisoning.

| Treatment |
Treatment depends on the cause of
coma. Some of the causes are treatable and reversible and others may
result in a permanent comatose state.

| Comments |
Coma is a serious condition. Tests
including X-rays, blood tests, spinal tap (lumbar puncture), and
electroencephalography (EEG) may be performed to determine the
cause. Many patients recover, however, others may remain comatose or
get worse.
