Blood Pressure Device (Sphygmomanometer)


What is a sphygmomanometer?
A sphygmomanometer is a method for measuring blood pressure. It is normally used by wrapping a tube around the arm and then filling the tube with air pressure. This temporarily stops blood flow. When the air pressure is released, blood flow returns and the pressure of the blood flow can be measured.

When is a sphygmomanometer used?
A sphygmomanometer is used on almost all ICU patients. The doctors and nurses use the sphygmomanometer to get a blood pressure value. Blood pressure values are used to guide many treatments in the ICU.

Does use of a sphygmomanometer hurt?
No.

How long is a sphygmomanometer used?
Blood pressure readings may be taken periodically during a patient's stay in the ICU. Each reading only takes a few moments.

Are there any potential complications associated with use of a sphygmomanometer?
No.
