What is a CPAP machine?
CPAP is a type of breathing machine that is designed to help oxygen enter the lungs. CPAP does not breathe for the patient. CPAP does help hold the lungs open to allow more oxygen to enter the lungs. The CPAP machine is connected to tubing and a facemask worn by the patient.

When is CPAP used?
CPAP is used when a patient needs help getting oxygen into the blood and oxygen therapy is not adequate.

Does the use of a CPAP machine hurt?
The use of a CPAP machine does not hurt. Although the CPAP machine is relatively quiet, the patient can always feel or hear the air rushing.

How long is a CPAP machine used?
The doctor determines how long the CPAP machine is used.

Are there any potential complications associated with use of a CPAP machine?
Complications associated with CPAP include mask discomfort, skin sores around the mask, and bloating from swallowing air.
