Official Patient and Family website of the Society of Critical Care Medicine Code Button

What is a code button?
A code button is usually found in each ICU room. The ICU staff pushes this button for emergencies such as a cardiopulmonary arrest. Emergencies within the hospital are often referred to as "codes".

How does it work?
Activation of the button signals the code team, usually through a pager system. Often the location of the code is also announced on the hospital loud speaker system. Once notified, all code team members drop their present activities and proceed immediately to the scene of the code.

When should it be used?
Only in case of emergencies.

Who should push the code button?
Only the ICU staff.
