What is a BIPAP Machine?
The BIPAP machine is a specific type of breathing machine that helps the patient breathe. It is a small, bedside respiratory machine connected to tubing and a facemask worn by the patient. The BIPAP machine does two things - it helps push air into the lungs and helps hold the lungs open to allow more oxygen to enter the lungs. Each time the patient breathes, the BIPAP machine assists the patient by applying air pressure to the lungs while the patient is breathing out (exhaling or expiration) in order to hold open the air sacs in the lungs.

When is a BIPAP machine used?
A BIPAP machine is used when a patient can not breathe completely on their own and needs help getting oxygen into the blood. The BIPAP machine is used if the doctor is trying to avoid putting a breathing tube in the patient.

Does the use of a BIPAP machine hurt?
The use of a BIPAP machine does not hurt. Although the BIPAP machine is relatively quiet, the patient can always feel or hear the air rushing.

How long is a BIPAP machine used?
The doctor determines how long the BIPAP machine is used.

Are there any potential complications associated with use of a BIPAP machine?
Complications associated with BIPAP include mask discomfort, skin sores around the mask, and bloating from swallowing air.
