Drugs That Treat Nausea
(Antiemetic Drugs)

What is an antiemetic drug?
These drugs help patients feel less nauseated (less sick to the stomach).

 
Why is it given?
The patient usually tells the nurse or doctor that he or she is nauseated and the medication is then prescribed. Occasionally, these medications will be given to patients to prevent nausea from occurring.

 
How long is it used?
Usually for a short period of time until the nausea goes away.

 
Does it have side effects?
These drugs are sometimes associated with side effects but they are usually mild. The most common side effect is sleepiness.
