How given: by mouth (PO), intravenous (IV)
Uses: Respiratory infection, skin, soft tissue, and bone infection, endocarditis, peritonitis, bacteria in the blood. Given to prevent infection to those at risk for bacterial endocarditis when penicillin is contraindicated. The oral form is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the intestines.
Comment: This antibiotic is used to treat moderate to severe conditions as described above. It may be useful in the treatment of post-operative infections, brain abscesses, and meningitis.
