How given: by mouth (PO), intravenous (IV), ophthalmic solution (eye drops), topical ointment
Uses: Respiratory infection, ear infection, pertussis, acne, diptheria, Legionnaire’s disease, intestinal amebiasis, pre-operative intestinal decontamination, gonorrheal disease, chlamydial infection. Prevention for rheumatic fever and bacterial endocarditis, if penicillin is contraindicated.
Comment: This antibiotic is used to treat mild to moderate infections and prevent infections in the areas described above. The eye drop solution is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. The topical preparation is used to treat superficial infections of the skin.
