What is an
antibiotic?
An antibiotic is a drug that kills or decreases the growth
of germs (bacteria). Antibiotics are commonly given by vein
(IV) in the ICU. They may also be given by mouth or through
a tube leading to the stomach.

Why is it
given?
An antibiotic is usually given to treat infection. Sometimes
it is given following certain operations and injuries to
help prevent infection.

How long is it
used?
An antibiotic will be given until infection is controlled.
With serious infections antibiotics are often given for
10-14 days or sometimes longer.

Does it have
side effects?
Antibiotics do have side effects. Some, such as upset
stomach, skin rash or diarrhea, are minor others are more
serious.
